Pets are not allowed inside emergency public shelters due to health and safety reasons, except in one pet friendly shelter.
Plan Ahead!
Advanced planning is essential – it could save your pet’s life and make yours easier during an emergency.
Acquire a pet carrier (portable kennel) or crate for each house pet if you plan to travel. These carriers should be large enough for the pet to stand up and turn around in.
Take time to familiarize you pet with the portable kennel. Kennel tops and bottoms can be separated to make a pet’s bed.
Be sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date. This is especially important for those of you who plan to board your pet, because most boarding facilities will require proof of current rabies, distemper and kennel cough (Bordatella) vaccinations.
Be sure you pet wears a properly fitted collar and currents license, identification and rabies tags at all times. Identification tags should display your home number plus the number of a relative outside the affected region. Acquire a leash to have on hand to maintain control of your pet.
Survey your home and determine the best location away from windows to place your pet(s) during a disaster susch as a utility room, bathroom, kitchen or other tiles area that can be cleaned easily.
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) adhere to the highest quality of standards, which help ensure the best care for your pet.
